Diesel EGR problems, put right properly
Leaking coolers, clogged valves and the recall everyone half-remembers — we diagnose the EGR system with evidence, check your VIN against BMW’s campaigns, and fix the cause.
How EGR trouble shows itself
The EGR system recirculates exhaust gas to cut emissions — through a coolant-fed cooler that can leak, and a valve that clogs with soot. Both produce symptoms owners notice long before the cause is obvious.
One symptom outranks the rest: a diesel of this era losing coolant with no visible leak should be checked promptly, not topped up and ignored.

Recall work is free — we’ll tell you if yours qualifies
BMW recalled hundreds of thousands of UK diesels — N47 and B47 four-cylinders and N57 sixes, mostly built between about 2010 and 2017 — because a leaking EGR cooler can, in rare cases, let coolant and soot smoulder in the intake. Recall replacements are carried out free by BMW dealers, and we check every car’s VIN against open campaigns at every visit.
Not every EGR fault is the recall, though. Valves clog with soot on any high-mileage diesel — especially short-trip cars — and cleaning or replacing them is routine work for us, as is putting right intakes and pipework on cars that ran with a leak. And if anyone suggests simply deleting the EGR system: defeating emissions equipment is illegal for road use in the UK, so we repair it properly instead.
Evidence first, then the fix
Fault codes, live EGR flow readings and cooling-system checks — so we treat the cause, not the symptom.
If your car has an open BMW EGR campaign, we tell you and point you to the dealer — that work is done free at BMW’s expense.
Coolers and valves replaced with genuine or OE parts, or professionally cleaned where that’s the honest fix — intake inspected for heat damage while we’re there.
Road-tested with live data rechecked, coolant system verified, and our work guaranteed for 12 months / 15,000 miles.
Is my problem the recall, or a repair I pay for?+
We check your VIN against BMW’s open campaigns first — if the recall applies, the cooler replacement is done free by a BMW dealer and we’ll say so. Faults outside the campaign (a clogged valve, a failed cooler on a car whose recall was already done) are normal repairs, quoted clearly before any work.
Can you just clean the EGR valve?+
Often, yes — soot-clogged valves frequently clean up well, and we’ll say so when that’s the honest fix. When a valve is worn or a cooler is leaking internally, cleaning is a false economy and we’ll show you why on the video.
Is unexplained coolant loss urgent?+
Treat it seriously. On an affected diesel, coolant disappearing with no visible leak is the classic cooler symptom — stop topping it up and get it checked. It’s usually something mundane, but this is the one issue where “probably” isn’t good enough.
My BMW is petrol — does any of this apply?+
The recall is diesel-only, and diesel EGR clogging is far more aggressive. Petrol models have their own emissions components we look after, but if you drive a petrol BMW this particular worry isn’t yours.
Would an EGR delete solve it permanently?+
No — removing or defeating emissions equipment is illegal for road use in the UK and an MOT issue. The lawful, lasting fix is a properly repaired system with the root cause addressed, which is exactly what we do.
